More than 80% of Chinese students belonging to the LGBTQ community suffers from severe depression. A study conducted by Beijing Normal University has revealed the demoralizing fact.

Chinese news site Caixin Global has analysed the news and found that more than 40% of students have considered suicide at some point in their lives. The university took data from around 700 LGBTQ students from 29 provinces of the country.

The study also revealed that support from school, teachers, parents, and friends can improve the mental health of the student. However, support for the LGBTQ community is rare in China. The survey found that only 2.9% of students had supportive teachers or school while growing up. The mental health of these students is significantly better than the rest. About 80% of students told that they have come out to someone, however, around three-quarters of them have not informed their parents, relatives, or teachers.

In 1997, China decriminalized homosexual acts. However, the condition of the LGBTQ community is far from better. They face discrimination and censorship in almost every walk of their lives.
