Pope Francis said that the possibility of having a female Deacon was still in the process as the Vatican commission kept exploring its possibility but until now there were still no plans for the having female deacons right away. He said that the commission did not have any intention of taking any action for the possibility of Female Deacon at the moment.

During a recent in-flight press conference, while he was returning from Bulgaria and North Macedonia, Pope Francis said that there was a separate way of imagining when it came to the female diaconate that was completely different from the male diaconate point of view. He said that fundamentally it was uncertain that it was the ordination with the same form that is used for the same purpose as the male ordination. He said that some people said that there was doubt regarding the ordination and needed further study.

The visit of Pope Francis to North Macedonia and Bulgaria was mostly dedicated to the ecumenical dialogue with the orthodox Christianity. The difference was that the Bulgarian Orthodox Church had female deaconesses.

As part of the orders of the Church, the role of a diaconate is only open to men at the moment. In 2016, Pope Francis had appointed a commission for studying the possibilities of having women for serving the same role as male and it could be with or without the sacrament of ordination.

During the press conference, Pope Francis said that some of the researchers from the Vatican commission concluded that historically the role played by the female diaconate was different from that of the male deacons without sacramental ordination.
